Top 10 packing tips for a smooth move
Pack by rooms
Have a good clear out of each room a month beforehand.
Try to keep similar room items together, for example books, CDs, clothes, kitchen utensils etc. This will make unpacking much easier.
Label every box
It’s very important to label the box with the contents so you know where things are stored. If you don't label your boxes carefully you'll end up opening them before you know where they should go.
Keep important documents safe
Pack important documents together, such as birth and marriage certificates, and keep them in a safe place. Once you arrive, make sure you unpack them before they get buried or sent to the loft. Keep them with you in your car if necessary.
Don’t overfill your boxes and make them too heavy, this should reduce the risk of injury or breakage. Leaving space will allow you to add small items later if you need to keep things together.
Pack heavier items individually and use smaller boxes to make lifting easier. If you pack with other items place the heavier ones at the bottom of the box and lighter items on top.
Pack your fragile items individually with plenty of wrapping and label the boxes accordingly. Use newspaper, tissue or bubble wrap, and make sure the items can’t move around inside the box. Label the box as FRAGILE.
Storing the boxes
Use your garage as a pre-staging area ready for the move, this will help keep the house clear of clutter while you pack the rest of your belongings.
Use the new garage or spare bedroom to store boxes before unpacking, this will avoid too much clutter and enable you to organise your furniture quickly.
Fridges and freezers ned to be empty and if possible de frosted. Cookers need to be disconnected and reconnected at your new house. Secure washing machines with transit brackets to avoid damage in translon. Dishwasher should be empty and hoses drained.
Keep a kettle, T bags, milk, sugar and biscuits accessible for your moving day and plan on a take out in the evening with a bottle of Champers!
Recycle your cardboard
It’s surprising just how much cardboard you’ll have after the move. To avoid being surrounded by empty boxes for days, spend an hour dismantling them and call us for a box pick up on 01869 233777.
